TEMPE, Ariz. — To the surprise of no one, the Los Angeles Angels have built their marketing efforts around newly acquired slugger Albert Pujols.

But one segment of that campaign has run afoul of the player’s wishes. The Angels have 20 billboards around Southern California with Pujols pictured in an Angels uniform alongside the Spanish words “El Hombre.”

Pujols has asked not to be called that in deference to St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Famer Stan Musial, who was referred to as Stan “The Man” during most of his 22-year career.

The Angels said they did not consult Pujols or his agent before launching the campaign. It was planned shortly after the Angels signed the first baseman to a 10-year, $250 million contract in December.

“Like I say, I haven’t talked to them, but I prefer not to use [El Hombre],” Pujols said Wednesday.

It’s an emotional issue for Pujols because he became acquainted with 90-year-old Musial in his 11 seasons playing in St. Louis. In 2010, Pujols asked St. Louis media and fans not to call him “El Hombre.”

“I still have the same respect for him as I had, not just for what he’s done in baseball but for what he did for his country,” Pujols said. “That’s something you have to appreciate.”

Musial served in the Navy during World War II and has worked extensively with the United Service Organizations, as well as several other groups and charities. Last year, he was awarded the Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor.

Angels vice president for communications Tim Mead said the signs featuring “El Hombre” represent 20 of the 70 Angels billboards in Los Angeles, Orange and Riverside counties.

“We’re more aware of his feelings about that now, but I don’t think his feelings are directed at our marketing campaign,” Mead said. “He hasn’t approached us with anything and it’s been explained to him [that] it’s one prong of our campaign, not its full-fledged focus.”

Dodgers' Belisario admits to failed test for cocaine

Ronald Belisario spent last season in Venezuela instead of with the Los Angeles Dodgers because of visa problems.

The reason? A positive test for cocaine.

Belisario says he only used the drug once, but doesn’t remember when he tried it, when he tested positive or who administered the test. He said he must serve a 25-game suspension — Major League Baseball has not announced any discipline.

”I don’t have a problem with drugs, I’m good,” Belisario said Wednesday, the first day of workouts for Dodgers pitchers and catchers at spring training. ”It was a one-time thing.”

Belisario has had a checkered past, derailing what was once a promising career.

As a rookie in 2009, he had a 2.04 ERA in 69 appearances despite getting a late start to the season because of visa problems. Belisario again had visa issues the following year, in part because of a DUI arrest in Pasadena, Calif., in 2009. He also left the team for a month to enter a drug rehabilitation program in 2010, which he said was not for cocaine. The 29-year-old right-hander wouldn’t elaborate on why he went into the program.

Belisario spent last season playing in Venezuela after the positive test for cocaine prevented him from obtaining the necessary paperwork to enter the United States. The Dodgers also placed him on the restricted list for the third time in two seasons last March, which is still in place.

Belisario cleared up his visa problems in plenty of time for this season, arriving Jan. 23, but said he still has to serve a 25-game suspension for failing to comply with baseball’s joint drug agreement. He wasn’t sure if the positive cocaine test was the reason for the suspension, but it appears to be for violating his drug treatment program.

”I don’t know what’s going on,” he said.

After his superb rookie season, Belisario’s ERA ballooned to 5.04 in 59 games during his troublesome 2010 season. He wasn’t exactly dominating in the Venezuelan Winter League last year, either, posting another 5-plus ERA with 15 walks in 22 2/3 innings for Margarita.

Despite his troubled past, the Dodgers are ready to give him a fresh shot in the hopes that he can regain his rookie-season form.

”The thing with Beli is to have an understanding of his past, but he’ll have a fresh start here,” Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. ”He’ll be tested like everyone in baseball, maybe even more. Until we have any problems, I’m going to anticipate he’s in good order.”

Mattingly said he doesn’t plan to keep an extra focus on Belisario, but added that the team does have personnel who deal with counseling and giving players what they need, no matter the situation.

”I don’t necessarily have to be part of the actual conversations as long as we know he’s being able to see someone if he wants to,” Mattingly said. ”I think baseball is proactive and we’re proactive in making sure everything’s available.

Belisario arrived to the Dodgers’ clubhouse early on Wednesday, got dressed and chatted with a couple of his teammates before heading in for a physical. He, like the rest of the pitchers, went through a handful of drills during the first workout, then threw his first bullpen session of the spring, about 35 pitches.

After everything he had been through to get here, he was glad to be back.

”I am so excited to be here,” he said. ”I was waiting for this moment when I was home, and finally, I’m here.”

Los Angeles-- Players meetings are fine, but Magic Johnson thinks the Los Angeles Lakers need Kobe Bryant to sit down with management to address some issues.

DALLAS — Players meetings are fine, but Magic Johnson thinks the Los Angeles Lakers need Kobe Bryant to sit down with management to address some issues.

Bryant and general manager Mitch Kupchak have been exchanging barbs in the media recently. Bryant said that the Lakers either need to trade Pau Gasol or say they’re keeping him, and Kupchak said that the team would keep its options open.

Johnson thinks Kobe is missing the point concerning the GM, that he needs to speak to Jim Buss, who is the Lakers’ vice president of player personnel and also the son of Lakers’ owner Dr. Jerry Buss.

“We have to remember now, it’s not Mitch’s situation anymore,” Johnson told reporters on a conference call Tuesday promoting his upcoming ESPN film, “The Announcement,” on Wednesday.

“[Kupchak is] not running the team,” Johnson said. “Jim Buss is running the team. So, Mitch has to follow the direction of Jim Buss and what he wants. I wouldn’t say Mitch is the problem or anything. He’s going to do his job.

“… I think what Kobe really probably wants is just be informed. As a leader, as a future Hall of Famer, as a guy who has brought five championships to the Lakers and the fans of Los Angeles, he just wants to probably have more communication, probably like he did when Phil Jackson was there and he worked well with Mitch. I don’t think that Kobe feels he’s got that type of relationship or the communication has been there with Jim.

“So, I think what has to probably happen is sit Kobe down [and] Jim, sit him down [too] and say, ‘Hey, Dr. Buss was the master at taking you to lunch or taking you to dinner and really going over what he thought about, or what he was thinking and what he wanted to do with the team and Jerry West was great at that as well.’ Kobe, Mitch and Jim just got to get on the same page and it will be OK.”

When Bryant was informed at shootaround about Johnson’s suggestion for a sitdown between him and Jim Buss he only offered a one-word response — “perhaps.”

As for why Bryant made the comments in the first place that would necessitate the meeting with him and Buss?

“Nobody else is going to say it,” Bryant said. “I’m the only one with cojones big enough to say it, so I said it.”

Bryant has said that his preference is to keep Gasol, and Andrew Bynum with him.

“I don’t know why you would trade Pau Gasol,” he said during an appearance on “The Scott Pelt Show” on ESPN Radio. “We won two championships with him. He’s definitely a great player. A top two guy in the league at his position. So it’s like, I don’t really understand any of that stuff, but I don’t have any say in it. I just have to keep going in and playing hard.”

With the media abuzz with Bryant’s and Kupchak’s comments, Lakers players got together after Monday’s win over Portland.

“I wouldn’t have called it a ‘team meeting,’ ” Bryant said after Lakers shootaround on Wednesday in preparation for their game against the Dallas Mavericks. “When I heard it was being labeled a team meeting it was pretty funny to me. It was just kind of after the game, guys talk and D-Fish (Derek Fisher) got up and talked and said a couple words and that was about it.”

The Lakers answered questions Wednesday about the “meeting.”

“I think it’s great,” Lakers coach Mike Brown said. “I’ve been a part of many teams where guys call team meetings and what they’re trying to do, they’re trying to step up and take some ownership in the process on both sides of the ball. I’m more than happy about it. If they have them in the future, to me, I think that’s a big positive.”
Did the coach feel out of the loop and want to find out what issues the meeting addressed?

“I also do not need to know what they talked about in there,” Brown said. “I did not ask for any details.”

Bryant provided a few details to reporters, however. For starters, the postgame talk was Fisher’s idea.

“He’s kind of the meeting-caller,” Bryant said. “I’m not much of a meeting person. But, he’s the one that calls the meetings and does most of the emotional speaking.”

As for what the meeting accomplished?

“It was just us understanding that we’re reaching the midway point of the year and we really have to lock in on what we have to do and stay focused on ourselves and not let any outside distractions — be it trade talk, be it criticism or whatever the case may be — interfere with what we have to do as a group, as a cohesive unit,” Bryant said. “That’s really the gist of the message.”

Bynum said it was simple as well.

“Just focus and commit to defense every night,” he said. “[Against the Trail Blazers] we played major defense and that’s what won us the game. For us, it’s all about defense. Scoring the ball is one thing. We might not average 100 points. We average like, 92, 93. We gotta hold teams down if we want to have a chance at winning. So we can’t come out and have nights where we just allow teams to go anywhere they want on.”

While sources with familiarity of the players-only meeting told ESPNLosAngeles.com that friction between the players and coaching staff was one of the issues addressed Monday, Bryant gave Brown another public stamp of approval Wednesday.

“It’s a constant learning process for him, coming into a group that’s [established],” Bryant said. “We know how to play so well together, so forth and so on. We have certain things that are habitual for us, whether it’s pregame routines and all this other stuff, that may seem shocking to him. Like, ‘How the hell did you win championships doing this?’ But it works for us and it’s just a matter of him getting used to it and he’s doing a good job.”

The Lakers’ game against the Mavericks is game No. 33 of their 66-game schedule, the exact halfway point for their regular season coming in the same location where their playoff run ended in an embarrassing 36-point blowout in the deciding game of the second round sweep last season.

“It’s a big challenge, they’re playing extremely well,” Bryant said of the Mavs game. Dallas comes into Wednesday having won seven of its last eight games. “It’s a good chance for us to measure up, see where we are and see if we can carry over what we did defensively against Portland and the second half against Phoenix to this game tonight. We’ll see how well we do.”

Bryant still has hope for his team, not just to beat the defending-champion Mavs, but to return to championship form themselves.

“We can, but we got to be damn-near perfect,” Bryant said. “But we can. You see it in other sports where it happens where teams come seemingly out of nowhere, but that’s because everybody is playing well at the right time and guys understand their assignments and understand their roles. It can happen.”

As for Bryant and any widely perceived dissatisfaction with the franchise’s direction and transition out of the Jackson era, Bynum insisted the iconic guard is just fine.

“He’s been Kobe,” the center said. “He’s just going out and getting buckets. That’s what he does.”

Given that it’s all anyone’s talked about for a week and it’s going down in the show’s backyard, Saturday Night Live had to say something about Jeremy Lin. So it did – and SNL wasted no time doing it, devoting the first sketch of the night to Lin’s exploits. There were Lin puns made. And then, there were offensive jokes about Lin’s Asianness made (with references to the Jason Whitlock and ESPN headline controversies, to boot). But then, when the Linappropriateness went beyond cheap Asian jokes, the real issues started:

“He offered me $40 million, and no pay-per-view [money],” Pacquiao said, breaking into a laugh, according to Yahoo! Sports’ Kevin Iole. “No pay-per-view. Can you believe that? Would you do that? Come on. What would he say if I offered him $50 million – not $40 million, $50 million – and said ‘No pay-per-view. Take this money and be happy, but no pay-per-view.’ He wouldn’t do it, either.

“I told him, ‘OK, 50-50 [with the money] and I’ll agree to everything else,’ ” Pacquiao said. “I told him I would agree to all of the other things he was demanding. Everything. Even the blood testing he wanted, I would do it. But it had to be 50-50.”

Pacquiao says he wanted Floyd to be guaranteed $50 million with the rest of the revenue split — 55% to the winner and 45% to the loser. That seems like a fair deal.

Pacquiao has said that money is not an important factor to him when it comes to a fight with Floyd, but that doesn’t mean he should be treated unfairly. If Floyd insists he should be paid more guaranteed money and receive a greater cut of pay-per-view revenue than Manny, I can understand it, and I would expect Pacquiao to accept those terms. But to cut Manny completely out of the pay-per-view revenue is unfair.

Shaquille O’Neal has found a way to gain some more attention. This time, it may actually be entertaining. The day we have all been waiting for is finally going to come. On April 1 in Miami, Shaq will be climbing into the ring during the world’s most prestigious wrestling event at WrestleMania 28.

On Sunday, HollywoodLife.com confirmed the rumors that Shaq will be putting his 7-foot-1, 300-plus pound frame on the line: “Yes, I’ll be there!” Shaq reportedly said when asked about the rumors. He wouldn’t say who he is fighting, but it is believed that he will be taking on The Big Show, who is roughly the same height as Big Daddy Diesel but has about 100 pounds on him.

Between wearing pink underwear on late-night TV shows and attempting to dunk off of tiny trampolines, we can’t help but get the impression Shaq has only just begun his post-retirement assault on the universe. Something tells me he’s going to enjoy life after basketball more than he enjoyed winning all those championship rings.

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Greg Oden has suffered yet another setback with his troublesome knees.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Greg Oden has suffered yet another setback with his troublesome knees.

The often-injured 7-foot center was undergoing a minor procedure Monday to clear out debris in his left knee in Vail, Colo., when the surgeon determined there was additional damage and performed microfracture surgery, the Portland Trail Blazers said.

The former No. 1 pick in the 2007 NBA draft has now had two microfracture surgeries on his left knee, and one on his right. He has also undergone surgery for a fractured left kneecap.

The Blazers say Oden will not play this season.

“It’s hard to put into words the heartbreak for everyone involved, but especially for Greg. He’s a young man who has experienced a great number of physical challenges in his playing career and today is yet another significant setback for him,” Trail Blazers president Larry Miller said in a prepared statement. “We have a lot of empathy for Greg and his family during this difficult time.”

Oden, who has not played in an NBA game since Dec. 5, 2009, has appeared in 82 career games for the Blazers, averaging 9.4 points and 7.3 rebounds.

It was expected that he might be able to play this season, but a checkup before the start of training camp in December reportedly revealed concerns about a non-weight-bearing ligament in the left knee, further setting back his rehabilitation.

Oden was a restricted free agent heading into this season. The Blazers and Oden initially agreed to an $8.9 million qualifying offer for this year, but when the setback was announced the two sides restructured the deal, which was dropped to $1.5 million. He will become an unrestricted free agent following this season.

Oden has turned down several interview requests this season.

Shortly after the news about the latest surgery broke, Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge posted on Twitter: “Praying for my bro G.O. get better!”

The Blazers were in Los Angeles on Monday night for a game against the Lakers.

“I’m sure he’s saying, ‘Why Me?’ Sometimes in life, things like that happen, and you wonder why it’s happening to you,” coach Nate McMillan said about Oden before the game. “Some of these injuries have occurred, not only on the floor but off the floor. There’s really not an explanation for why, or sometimes how they’re happening. I’m sure it’s been a frustrating start for him.”

Portland’s acting general manager Chad Buchanan told reporters that the team knew there was the possibility of an additional microfracture surgery when he went in for the procedure. The doctor found two defects, he said.

Buchanan was asked whether the latest surgery might mean the end of Oden’s career.

“Greg’s still very young, in relative terms, for a professional basketball player. He’s recovered from a couple of these before — his last two microfracture lesions have healed fine,” Buchanan said. “So there’s no reason to think he couldn’t come back as long as he shows the work ethic and desire that he’s had in the past to come back. I think it’s premature to speculate anything beyond that.”

The former Ohio State star was selected over Oklahoma City’s Kevin Durant with the top pick in the 2007 draft. Debates raged over who should be the No. 1 selection, and the Blazers eventually went with Oden in the hope that he would lead the team — along with Brandon Roy and Aldridge — to an NBA championship.

But Oden’s rookie season was postponed when he required microfracture surgery on his right knee that forced him to miss the 2007-08 season.

“We definitely feel bad for him and we definitely want him to get better,” Aldridge said Monday night. “I think everybody’s praying for him, hoping he comes back from this healthy and strong. Just sad for him that he keeps going through the wire like that.”

Oden’s repeated knee problems have drawn comparisons to Sam Bowie, the injury-plagued big man the Blazers selected ahead of Michael Jordan in the 1984 draft. While Bowie played in 76 games his rookie season, averaging 10 points and 8.6 rebounds, he appeared in just 63 games over the next four seasons because of injuries. He missed the entire 1987-88 season. In all, he had five operations.

It was an odd time for a players-only meeting — minutes after a blowout victory over Portland — but the Los Angeles Lakers felt they needed to clear the air. So, according to sources, team leaders Kobe Bryant and Derek Fisher gathered everyone together in the Lakers’ locker room Monday night and tried to set the tone for the second half of the season.

Their message was clear: Trade rumors do not matter; your feelings about management or the coaching staff don’t matter; all that matters is that the 14 men in that locker room support and believe in one another. If they stay together and stay on the same page, they can get to where they want to go as a team.

Since the Lakers’ impressive 103-92 victory over the Blazers took place before the meeting, it’s hard to tell what effect the talk will have, but the Lakers seem to believe the meeting was productive and that the club is making progress.

The reference to trade rumors obviously concerned Pau Gasol and the non-stop chatter that he may not be a Laker after the March 15 trade deadline. Bryant came out in strong support of Gasol after Sunday night’s awful loss at Phoenix, saying that while he doesn’t want Pau to be traded, management should either move him quickly or announce that he’s staying in Los Angeles.

“It’s just tough for a player to give his all when you don’t know if you’re going to be here tomorrow,” Bryant said. “I’d rather them not trade him at all. If they’re going to do something, I wish they would just (expletive) do it. If they’re not going to do it, come out and say you’re not going to do it.”

General manager Mitch Kupchak responded to Bryant’s criticism by issuing a statement that essentially said that while he understands times are tough for Gasol, the big man is still on the block.

“To say publicly that we would not do this would serve no purpose and put us at a competitive disadvantage,” Kupchak said. “Taking such a course of action at this time would be a disservice to ownership, the team and our many fans.”

Kupchak’s statement, released shortly before Monday’s tip-off, probably had a lot to do with the players’ postgame powwow.

But there are other issues as well. Some of the Lakers are having trouble adjusting to Mike Brown’s coaching style, which is a sharp contrast to Phil Jackson’s. Some players are upset about what they perceive to be an ever-changing rotation and the up-and-down distribution of minutes, sources said. Others aren’t liking the long practices and shootarounds, while still others have bristled at Brown’s heavy-handed approach, as opposed to Jackson’s more laid-back style.

The players were not happy that after beating Phoenix at home Friday night and flying to Phoenix Saturday afternoon, they had to get up for a 10 a.m. shootaround Sunday morning. With Sunday’s game starting at 6 p.m., it would’ve been more typical to skip the morning shootaround in exchange for a pregame walk-through. One player said the Lakers’ body language and attitude at the shootaround was poor and that it set the tone for Sunday’s listless performance. But he expressed optimism that Brown, without being asked by the players, chose not to have a shootaround before Monday’s game.

“I think we’re starting to learn this coaching staff and they’re starting to learn us,” the player said.

Another sign of growth in the relationship between Brown and his players may be his decision recently to grant them more freedom on the floor. For most of the season, Brown has called out offensive plays practically every time down the floor. After spending the last six years in Jackson’s triangle offense, where there were few play calls from the bench and the players made reads, some Lakers were having trouble handling Brown’s micro-management of the offense.

But about a week-and-a-half ago, Brown began taking his foot off the brakes and now he’s calling plays only about half the time, according to a player. Having won two titles in the last three years, the players feel they deserve that kind of freedom and will blossom with it.

With Metta World Peace and Andrew Bynum recently going to the media with criticisms of either Brown or his decision-making, the dynamic between the coach and his players is still a work in progress.

But at Monday night’s meeting, Bryant, Fisher and Gasol told their teammates to come to them with any issues they have with the coaching staff, and then they, as the club’s leaders, will talk it over with the coaches.

The true effectiveness of the meeting will be tested on the court. With games coming up Wednesday in Dallas and Thursday in Oklahoma City, there won’t be a long wait for an answer.

Kobe to Lakers: Either trade Gasol or don't

PHOENIX — After a frustrating 102-90 loss to the Phoenix Suns on Sunday in a game where the Los Angeles Lakers trailed by as many as 27 points before dropping the game and their road record to a paltry 5-11, the elephant that’s been lingering in the team’s locker room ever since the vetoed Chris Paul trade was finally addressed by Kobe Bryant.

Either trade Pau Gasol, or don’t, Bryant said. But make a decision either way and make it fast.

“Basketball is such an emotional game, you got to be able to have all of yourself in the game and invested in the game. We didn’t have that,” Bryant said after Gasol had 17 points and 12 rebounds against the Suns. “Pau, it’s hard for Pau because of all this trade talk and all this other stuff, it’s hard for him to kind of invest himself completely or immerse himself completely into games when he’s hearing trade talk every other day. I wish management would come out and either trade him or not trade him.”

Bryant made it clear that he prefers that the Lakers choose to not trade Gasol, the four-time All-Star who Bryant paired with to win consecutive championships in 2009 and 2010.

“I talked to (Gasol) a little bit about it,” Bryant said. “It’s just tough for a player to give his all when you don’t know if you’re going to be here tomorrow. I’d rather them not trade him at all. If they’re going to do something, I wish they would just (expletive) do it. If they’re not going to do it, come out and say you’re not going to do it. This way he can be comfortable, he can go out, he can play and he can invest all of himself into the game.”

Just like Bryant wants Gasol to remain in L.A., Gasol said he wants to remain a Laker.

“So, we got March 15th, the (trade) deadline,” Gasol said as he made his way to the team bus after the game when reporters caught up to him to pass on Bryant’s remarks. “That’s what I’m thinking (about). Hopefully we get to that day (without a trade). Obviously if something was told to me before, it would be good, but I’m not trying to force things. I’m not trying to force a team, ‘If they want to trade me, trade me tomorrow.’ Because obviously I still believe in our team, I believe in our city and I believe that we can continue to be a special, special team and a successful team.”

Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak told SI.com over the weekend that a major move involving the Lakers’ roster was unlikely.

“Of course we’ll talk to a lot of teams (about trades), like everybody else does, leading up until the trade deadline to see if there is a way to improve the team,” Kupchak said in the SI.com report. “But the likelihood is that this is the team that’s going to finish into the playoffs. That’s just the way it normally works, but we’ll see.”

However, Kupchak has not had any direct conversations with Gasol about the power forward’s future with the franchise since the two spoke on the first day of training camp in the aftermath of the failed three-team deal that would have sent Gasol to the Houston Rockets in order to acquire Paul from the New Orleans Hornets.

“No. Nothing,” Gasol said when asked if he has had a meeting with Kupchak regarding the continued trade speculation. “I’ve seen him after games in the locker room. That’s about it, but we haven’t really spoken about anything.”

Gasol was then asked by a reporter if he planned to initiate a conversation with Kupchak when the team returns to Los Angles on Monday to play the Portland Trail Blazers.

“I don’t know if I should be approaching him, because obviously there’s a lot of rumors. There’s a lot of talks and teams seem to continue to make offers and (the Lakers are) listening, otherwise those offers wouldn’t be out there,” Gasol said. “It seems like there is a team almost every other day that is putting something together, which is flattering and I’m glad there are teams out there who would love to have me on their roster, because they believe in the player that I am, but at the same time, it’s frustrating because if I own a player or a player plays for my team and I say, ‘Look, I’m not interested in listening to anything because I value my player and I want to keep him here,’ then all that stops. But, it seems that it’s not that way. That’s the feeling I get and I haven’t really confirmed it, but from the situation and all of the talks, that’s what I perceive.”

Lakers coach Mike Brown said that Gasol hasn’t been able to avoid the rumors that have linked Gasol in trade scenarios with Houston, Boston, Minnesota, Orlando and Chicago in recent weeks.

“He was on his computer (Saturday) when we landed and he was looking through some articles and all that,” Brown told ESPNLosAngeles.com after the team’s shootaround Sunday. “I just leaned over and said, ‘Pau, you got to stop looking at that crap. It will kill you if you do.’ It’s out of his control. If it’s going to happen, it’s going to happen. Nobody knows, except for the people upstairs and ownership. … To worry about it, to try to do anything about it, it’s wasted energy.”

Coming into Sunday, the 11-year veteran was averaging just 16.6 points on 49.5 percent shooting compared to the 18.8 points on 52.9 percent shooting he averaged last season, but Brown insists Gasol’s on-court performance is not linked to any off-court speculation.

“What he shoots from the field and all that (has nothing to do with the trade rumors),” Brown said. “Pau can play. That has nothing to do with any of the rumors out there. Rumors are going to happen all the time. There’s rumors about every guy on this team in one way, shape or form. We just got to as a team, as individuals, we got to ignore the noise.”

Bryant told reporters Friday, “It’s important for (Gasol) to know we support him,” but was much more vocal on Sunday.

“I’m sure we’ll make some tweaks here and there, but the foundation obviously starts with myself and Pau and the emergence of Andrew (Bynum),” Bryant said. “But you can’t have one of our pillars not knowing if he’s going to be here or not. Do something. One way or another, do something.

“… If they trade him, at least you have some type of closure. At least he gets some closure. I’d rather them not trade him, but if they’re going to do it, (expletive) do it already. If you’re not going to do it, come out and say you’re not going to do it.”

The Lakers have started the season 18-13 despite the tumult surrounding Gasol’s status and Bryant clearly appreciated how Gasol has handled himself thus far.

“He’s been the consummate professional,” Bryant said. “He’s going out, he’s trying to do what he can, but let’s be real. If you didn’t know you were going to be here tomorrow, if your head’s on the chopping block, you feel like you’re just waiting. It’s tough to put all of yourself into the game.

“You just want security, a little clarity. I think that would help him out a lot.”

Kobe Bryant is making a full court press to save his marriage … and has sworn up and down to Vanessa he will never stray again if she takes him back.

Sources connected with the couple tell TMZ … Kobe has “aggressively” pursued Vanessa over the last three weeks, and she’s been receptive. We’re told Vanessa tends to believe Kobe, but still isn’t sure the marriage can be resurrected.

And then there’s the subject of lavish gifts. We’re told Kobe has given Vanessa a very expensive piece of jewelry. We don’t know the price, nor do we know how it compares to the $4 million ring she scored after Kobe’s infamous dalliance a few years back.

As for whether they will drop the divorce, we’re told they are working on a reconciliation. Several sources very familiar with the couple told us at the time Vanessa filed legal docs not to be surprised if the papers are withdrawn … because they both really love each other.
